Welcome to the
Kent and Medway Cancer Research Network
The Kent and Medway Cancer Research Network (KMCRN) was established in 2003 as part of a national strategy to improve cancer patient care, by improving the coordination, quality and speed of cancer research.
The KMCRN plans and coordinates clinical trial activity across Kent and Medway in order to deliver clinical trials and other well designed studies that are part of the NCRN/NIHR portfolio.
At its inception in 2003, the number of patients entering clinical trials from this Network was comparatively small and, with the exception of Haemato and Gynae-oncology, was largely confined to the Kent Oncology Centre at Maidstone Hospital. Many hospitals were unfamiliar with Cancer Clinical Trials and substantial work was required to establish an appropriate infrastructure and engage multi disciplinary staff in the research agenda. KMCRN staff, although centrally employed by the Host Trust (NHS Medway), are all based in Acute Trusts across the Network.
